ESPectre: detect motion with Wi-Fi and an ESP32

A step-by-step setup guide with requirements, checks and common problems.

The short version

ESPectre turns a small ESP32 board into a motion sensor that uses your Wi-Fi signal. When someone moves through a room, they change how the signal travels, and the board measures that change. No camera, no microphone, no wearable. It runs entirely on the board and works with Home Assistant.

•What you need: one supported ESP32 board per room, a USB data cable, a normal 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and desktop Chrome.

•What you get: a Motion Detected sensor and a Movement Score from 0 to 1, in Home Assistant, over MQTT, as a Matter occupancy sensor or through a local web API.

•How to start: flash the board from your browser, connect it to Wi-Fi, place it 3 to 8 meters from your router and do a quiet-then-walk test.
