Claude Code vs Cursor

Stride AI Academy

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It runs in the terminal, IDEs, a desktop app and the web. Cursor is an AI code editor with an agent, a CLI and cloud agents. Choose Claude Code to delegate whole tasks, Cursor to work inside an editor, or use both.

This comparison is for people building tools and apps for clients. It's based on each vendor's docs and pricing pages, checked October 15, 2026. Stride AI Academy isn't affiliated with Anthropic or Cursor.

The core difference

Claude Code is built around delegation. You describe a task, it plans, edits files across the project, runs commands and tests, and reports back. You review the result. It works the same way in the terminal, the VS Code and JetBrains extensions, the Claude desktop app and on the web at claude.ai/code (Claude Code overview).

Cursor is built around the editor. You see your files, and AI help is woven into editing: an agent you chat with, plan mode for bigger changes, and suggestions as you type. It also has a CLI (the agent command) and cloud agents that keep working while you're away (Cursor CLI docs).

The line has blurred. Claude Code has an extension that runs inside VS Code and Cursor, and Cursor has a terminal agent. The difference is now more about where each one feels at home.

Side by side

Claude Code Cursor
Made by Anthropic Anysphere, a SpaceX subsidiary since August 2026
Home base Agent you delegate to (terminal, IDE, desktop, web) AI code editor
Terminal Yes, full CLI Yes, agent CLI
Cloud tasks Yes Yes, cloud agents
Models Claude models Grok models, plus third-party models on higher plans
Instructions CLAUDE.md (can read AGENTS.md) Rules in .cursor/rules (.mdc files) and AGENTS.md
MCP Yes Yes
Skills and plugins Yes Yes

Cursor's ownership change comes from the public record of SpaceX completing its acquisition of Anysphere on August 14, 2026. Its plans have changed since, so read the pricing section carefully.

Pricing structure

Claude Code comes with Claude's paid plans. Anthropic's pricing page lists Pro at $20 a month billed monthly ($17 a month billed annually), Max from $100 a month, and Team seats from $25 a month billed monthly. The Free plan doesn't include it (claude.com/pricing). You can also use it with API billing through an Anthropic Console account.

Cursor's pricing page lists (cursor.com/pricing):

Plan Price Notes from the page
Free $0 Limited usage
Plus $8/month Grok models only
Premium $30/month 4x Plus usage, cloud agents, third-party models
Super $100/month 15x Plus usage
Ultra $200/month 50x Plus usage
Teams From $30/user/month Pooled usage, admin and SSO

The page says third-party model usage isn't included in those prices: it's billed separately at API list price, with spending caps you can set. So if you want to use Claude models inside Cursor, expect to pay for that usage on top of a Premium or higher plan.

Checked against Anthropic and Cursor pricing pages, October 15, 2026. Both change often.

Workflows: what a build looks like

With Claude Code, a typical client build goes like this: you write a short spec, Claude Code reads the project, proposes a plan, makes changes across files, runs the tests and dev server, and fixes failures. You review the diff, ask for changes and commit. You spend more time reviewing and less time editing by hand.

With Cursor, you work in the editor. You ask the agent for a change, watch it edit files you can see, accept or reject edits, and type alongside it. It's well suited to work where you want to see and steer every change as it happens.

Both handle multi-file changes, both can run commands, and both can work in the cloud while you do something else.

Who each suits

Claude Code tends to suit you if:

  • You'd rather describe the outcome and review the result than edit line by line
  • You want the same agent in the terminal, IDE, desktop app and browser
  • You already pay for a Claude plan
  • You script work, run tasks in CI or schedule recurring jobs

Cursor tends to suit you if:

  • You want to see the code as it changes and stay in an editor all day
  • You like inline suggestions while typing
  • You want to switch between several model providers in one tool and are fine paying for third-party usage

Non-programmers often find delegation easier at first, because they describe what they want in plain language instead of working inside a code editor. But both need the same core skills: a clear spec, small steps and careful review.

Using both together

You don't have to choose:

  • Run Claude Code inside Cursor. The Claude Code extension installs in Cursor as well as VS Code, so you can delegate tasks to Claude Code and still use Cursor's editor.
  • Share instructions. Cursor reads AGENTS.md, and Claude Code can read it too. Keep your project rules there so both tools follow them.
  • Share MCP servers. Both support MCP, so the same GitHub, database or deployment servers can serve both. Cursor uses .cursor/mcp.json, and Claude Code uses .mcp.json or claude mcp add.
  • Review with the other tool. Ask one to review changes the other made before you commit.

FAQ

Is Cursor better than Claude for coding?

It depends on how you like to work. Cursor is an AI editor where you see and steer changes as they happen. Claude Code is an agent you delegate whole tasks to. Try both on the same real task and compare the results and how much correcting you did.

Is Cursor still relevant with Claude Code?

Yes, for people who want an editor-first workflow. The two overlap more than they used to: Cursor has a terminal agent and cloud agents, and Claude Code runs inside VS Code and Cursor. Many builders use both.

Should I use Claude Code with VS Code or Cursor?

Either works. Claude Code's extension installs in both VS Code and Cursor. If you already pay for Cursor and like its editor, run Claude Code there. If not, VS Code with the Claude Code extension, or the terminal, works fine.

Can I use Claude models in Cursor?

Cursor's pricing page, checked October 15, 2026, says third-party models are available from the Premium plan up, billed separately at API list price. The Plus plan is limited to Grok models. Check the page for current terms.
