Claude vs Copilot

Stride AI Academy

Claude vs Copilot is really a choice between Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent that you hand whole tasks to, and GitHub Copilot, GitHub's assistant that lives in your editor and on github.com. Copilot starts free and its paid plans start at $10 a month. Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan, from $20 a month. The confusing part is that Copilot can run Claude models too, so "Claude in Copilot" and "Claude Code" are not the same thing.

Everything below comes from GitHub's and Anthropic's own docs and pricing pages, checked November 7, 2026. Both products change often, so check the linked pages before you buy. Stride AI Academy isn't affiliated with Anthropic or GitHub.

What each one is

Claude Code is an agentic coding tool. Anthropic's overview says it reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and works with your development tools. You describe what you want, it plans the approach, writes the code across files and checks it works. It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains, in the Claude desktop app and in the browser at claude.ai/code. Each of those connects to the same engine, so your CLAUDE.md, settings and MCP servers carry across.

GitHub Copilot started as autocomplete and has grown into a family of tools. In your editor it gives inline suggestions as you type, inline chat and a Chat view where an agent can find code, make changes and run checks (VS Code Copilot docs). On github.com, the Copilot cloud agent researches a repository, plans changes and implements them in the background, then hands you a pull request to review. There's also Copilot CLI for the terminal.

So the short version: Claude Code is built around delegating whole tasks. Copilot is built around helping inside the tools you already use, with agents added on top.

Claude in Copilot is not Claude Code

This is where most people mix up "copilot vs claude". GitHub Copilot lets you pick the model behind it, and Anthropic's Claude models are on that list. GitHub's supported models page lists Claude Fable 5 and 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and older versions, next to models from OpenAI, Google, xAI, Microsoft and Moonshot AI.

When you choose Claude Sonnet 5.5 in Copilot Chat, you get Claude's model running inside Copilot's tools. You're still using Copilot: its editor features, its agent and its billing.

GitHub goes one step further with third-party agents. Once enabled in your settings, you can assign an issue to Anthropic's Claude agent on GitHub and it makes the changes and usually opens a pull request. VS Code's Copilot docs also say you can work with "the Copilot, Claude, or Codex agent harness" from the same Chat view.

Claude Code itself is Anthropic's own product. You install it, sign in with a Claude plan or an Anthropic Console account, and pay Anthropic.

Pricing

Both companies price by plan, but they Copilot plans come with a monthly pool of GitHub AI Credits, where one credit is $0.01. Code completions and next edit suggestions don't use credits on paid plans. Claude plans have usage limits rather than credits.

GitHub Copilot plans (GitHub's plans page and plan docs):

Plan Price Monthly AI credits
Free $0 Limited chat and agent use, 2,000 completions a month
Pro $10 a month 1,500 (worth $15)
Pro+ $39 a month 7,000 (worth $70)
Max $100 a month 20,000 (worth $200)
Business $19 per seat a month 1,900 per user
Enterprise $39 per seat a month 3,900 per user

Verified students get Copilot Student free, and verified teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects can qualify for free Copilot Pro. Paid individual plans can buy extra credits at $0.01 each.

Claude plans that include Claude Code (Claude pricing):

Plan Price
Free $0, no Claude Code
Pro $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly
Max $100 a month
Ultra $200 a month
Team Standard seat $25 per seat a month, or $20 billed yearly
Team Premium seat $125 per seat a month, or $100 billed yearly
Enterprise $20 per seat a month billed yearly, 20 seat minimum, plus usage at API rates

You can also skip a plan and pay per token through an Anthropic Console account. Our Claude Code pricing guide covers how plan limits and API billing compare.

Which models each can use

Claude Code runs Claude models only. On Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, Enterprise and Anthropic API accounts it defaults to Opus 5.5 (model config docs). You can switch with aliases:

/model sonnet
/model opus
/model haiku
/model fable
/model opusplan

opusplan uses Opus in plan mode and Sonnet once Claude starts writing code. Fable is never the default, so you pick it on purpose, and on some plans its usage bills to usage credits instead of your plan's limits. For more on picking between the middle two, see Claude Sonnet vs Opus.

GitHub Copilot gives you a choice of providers. Copilot Free uses auto model selection only. Paid plans let you choose models, and Pro+ and Max add premium models. In Copilot CLI you change the model with /model or the --model option. GitHub notes that larger context windows and higher reasoning levels use more AI credits.

If you want one tool that can switch between Claude and GPT models, Copilot does that. If you want the agent that Anthropic builds around its own models, that's Claude Code.

Agent features side by side

Feature Claude Code GitHub Copilot
Edits files and runs commands Yes Yes, in the CLI and agents
Cloud tasks that run while you're away Claude Code on the web Copilot cloud agent
Starts from a GitHub issue or PR @claude mentions via GitHub Actions Built into github.com
MCP servers Yes Yes
Skills Yes Yes
Hooks Yes Yes, in Copilot CLI
Custom agents Subagents Custom agents
Scheduled runs Cloud and desktop scheduled tasks, /loop Automations
CI scripting claude -p and GitHub Actions Programmatic mode in the CLI

The two have grown closer. Both now offer MCP, skills, hooks and custom agents. The differences show up in the details. Copilot's cloud agent runs on GitHub Actions, works in one repository per task, and each session stops after 59 minutes. Claude Code's surfaces share one engine, so you can start a task on the web and pull it into your terminal with claude --teleport.

How to try each one

Install Claude Code

On macOS, Linux or WSL:

Terminal
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash

On Windows PowerShell:

irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex

Then open a project and start it:

Terminal
cd your-project
claude

It asks you to log in on first use. Our install guide walks through every option.

Install GitHub Copilot CLI

You need an active Copilot subscription. Then pick one (install docs):

Terminal
npm install -g @github/copilot
winget install GitHub.Copilot
Terminal
brew install --cask copilot-cli

The npm install needs Node.js 22 or later. Start a session with copilot, and run /login if it asks you to sign in to GitHub. For Copilot in your editor, install the GitHub Copilot extension in VS Code or your IDE.

Connect Claude Code to GitHub

If your code lives on GitHub, you can give Claude Code the same "tag it in an issue" workflow Copilot has. Run this inside claude in your repository:

/install-github-app

It installs the Claude GitHub App, saves your key or subscription token as a secret and opens a pull request with the workflow. Merge it and @claude works in issues and pull requests (GitHub Actions docs). Our guide to using Claude Code with GitHub covers the full setup.

Who should pick which

Claude Code or GitHub Copilot?

  1. 1Do you want suggestions as you type in your editor?Yes, start with Copilot
  2. 2Do you mostly hand off whole tasks and review the result?Yes, start with Claude Code
  3. 3Do you want to switch between Claude and GPT models?Yes, Copilot covers several providers
  4. 4Does your team already pay for Copilot Business?Use it, and add Claude Code for the big jobs

Pick GitHub Copilot if you want a free start, you like typing with suggestions, your team works on github.com all day, or your company already buys Copilot seats. It's also the cheaper way to try Claude models, since Copilot Pro is $10 a month.

Pick Claude Code if you want an agent that takes a whole job from plan to tested change, you build tools and apps for clients, or you want Anthropic's full feature set around its models, including skills, hooks, subagents and the Agent SDK.

Use both if you can. A common split is Copilot for inline suggestions and Claude Code for larger tasks. Copilot can read a CLAUDE.md in your repository root as its agent instructions, and Claude Code can read an AGENTS.md, so one instructions file can serve both.

The bottom line

Claude vs Copilot isn't a contest between two copies of the same thing. Copilot is the broad assistant with a free tier, inline suggestions and many models. Claude Code is the focused agent that Anthropic builds for its own models. Start with the one that matches how you work today, then add the other when you hit its limits.
